Scrolling vs. GlanceabilityA growing issue the industry will have to face as Program Associated Data (PAD) emerges into the marketplace are usability issues associated with scrolling vs. glanceable text. "Glanceability" refers to how quickly and easily the visual design conveys information after the user is paying attention to the display - an issue of primary importance when considering vehicular distractions.
An efficient balance will have to be formed that allows the dynamic display of visual information, while not distracting drivers. It is a problem that has been examined to some extent by the DAB markets, as described by James Cridland, currently digital media director at Virgin Radio.
As PAD continues its march into the American marketplace, issues of scrolling vs. glanceability will gain in importance.
