NPR Labs Privacy PolicyEffective Date February 2, 2011 See related: NPR Labs Terms of Use
Welcome to the NPR Labs website, which is owned by National Public Radio, Inc. (“NPR”). At NPR, we recognize the importance of privacy to visitors of the NPR Labs website, currently at www.nprlabs.org, and any features or services of the NPR Labs website (collectively, the “Site”). This Privacy Policy explains what type of information is collected from you when you visit the Site and how that information may be used. Please note that this Privacy Policy is separate and distinct from the privacy policies governing NPR’s other websites, applications and services, the web sites, applications and services of NPR’s member stations, and other web sites, applications and services that may link to or from the Site.
Gathering of InformationNPR collects personally-identifying information (such as your name, e-mail address and telephone number) from the Site for a variety of purposes.
NPR asks visitors to the Site to provide certain personal information when they request an account in order to download software from the Site and/or participate in other password-restricted Site activities. Visitors may provide personal information when they contact us. NPR also may ask visitors to provide personal information in other limited circumstances specified at the time the information is gathered, such as if they want to purchase products or services from the Site.
Like all other Web servers, the Site’s Web server automatically creates log files for each visitor who accesses the Site. These "access logs" allow us to make the Site more useful to our visitors. The access logs do NOT record a visitor's name, address, e-mail address, phone number, credit card numbers, or any other personally-identifying information. Rather, they contain some or all of the following information:
- The Internet Protocol Address (IP Address) of the machine that accessed the Site.
- The date of the visit.
- The time of the visit.
- The path taken through the Site.
- The browser being used.
- A list of files downloaded or viewed.
- Any errors encountered.
CookiesNPR also uses "cookies" to collect information on the Site. A cookie is a string of characters that can be written to a file on the user's hard drive when the user visits a website. Only the web site, application or service that set the cookie can read it, and it can only be used as a record keeping device to store account information and information that the Site already has. It cannot be used to read other information from the user's hard drive. The Site only uses cookies within the password-protected areas of the Site, where certain software is made available for download (the “Software”) and where other features or services may be provided. These cookies track users' activity through the password-protected areas of the Site in order to control access to restricted areas of the Site, including the Software, to improve the Site's architecture, and to offer the user interactive features that would not be possible without them.
If you wish to prevent certain or all cookies from being set to your hard drive or device, or to clear existing cookies from your browser’s or device’s cache, you may disable them in your browser's preferences, although you will then be unable to download the Software or participate in NPRLabs.org/Connect, and your browser will be unable to accommodate certain functionalities of the Site.
Use of InformationThe use of personally-identifying information collected by NPR through the Site is limited to the following: managing and administering the Site and access to the Software and password-protected areas of the Site, NPR marketing and promotional purposes, fulfillment of newsletters and informational mailings, fulfillment of the purchase of any products or services, responding to user messages, other internal NPR purposes, and other purposes specified at the time the information is gathered. By providing this information, a visitor may receive e-mail, standard mail and/or telephone calls from NPR.
Personally-identifying information collected from the Site by NPR is not distributed to outside parties other than to NPR’s service vendor(s) for the sole purpose of – and only to the extent necessary for -- administering the Site and services available through the Site or delivering any requested products or services to the user.
NPR also may disclose personal information if required to do so by law or if it believes that such action is necessary to (a) comply with the law or with legal process, (b) protect against misuse or unauthorized use of the Site, or (c) protect the personal safety or property of users of the Site, the public or NPR and its employees.
If you do not want your personally-identifying information to be collected or used for any of these purposes, please do not provide it (although if you do not provide it, you will not be able to obtain an account or download the Software). You can also "opt out" according to the process described below.
NPR, with the assistance from time to time of its third party vendors, may use non-identifying aggregate information to analyze use of and better design the Site and to share with third parties in aggregate form only as appropriate. For example, we may tell a third party that a certain number of users accessed the Software or the Site. However, we will not disclose any information that could be used to identify those users.
SecurityNPR has in place what we believe to be appropriate physical, electronic, and managerial procedures to safeguard and secure the information we collect online. Account information for the Site is protected against unauthorized use by Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) security features, which encrypt your account information so that only your browser and the Site’s server can decipher it. Any credit card information collected through the Site for the purchase of products or services will be protected against unauthorized use by 128-bit encryption and SSL security features. Information stored on the Site is protected by a firewall to prevent unauthorized access to our systems. However, no internet, e-mail or mobile transmission is ever fully secure or error free. Because most e-mail and mobile transmissions are not encrypted, you should take special care in deciding what information you send to us via e-mail, SMS or text message or other mobile transmission.
ChildrenIf you are under 13 years of age, do not send any information about yourself, including your name, address, telephone number, or e-mail address. If we discover that we have collected any personally identifying information from a child under the age of 13, we will remove that information from our database as soon as possible.
Corrections to Personal Data; Opting OutPlease contact us at nprlabs@npr.org to (a) correct or update any personal information in the Site’s database that you state is erroneous, (b) opt-out of future promotional communications from NPR, or (c) request NPR to make reasonable efforts to remove your personal information from the Site’s database, thereby canceling your Site account. The user understands that it may be impossible to delete personal information entirely because of backups and records of deletions.
Acceptance of Privacy Policy TermsNPR reserves the right to change this policy. Any changes to this policy will be posted to this page as soon as reasonably possible, so please check this page periodically. Use of the Site constitutes consent to any policy then in effect. Please make sure that you read NPR Labs' Terms of Use and Software License Agreement to understand additional terms and conditions which apply to the use of the Site.
Links to Other SitesIt is important to note that this Site contains links to other sites, applications and services maintained by third parties that may not follow the same privacy policies as the Site. These sites, applications and services may use cookies, collect data, and use the data in ways that the Site would not. NPR is not responsible for the privacy practices or any information or materials on these other sites. Please visit these sites if you wish to review their privacy policies.
International User NoticeFor international users, please note that it may be necessary to transfer your information internationally and, in particular, your information may be transferred to and processed in the United States. For residents of the European Union: the data protection and other laws of other countries outside of the European Union may not be as comprehensive as those of the European Union. Please be assured that we take steps to ensure that your privacy is protected as described in this policy. By using this Site, you agree to have your information used and transferred to the United States set forth in this policy.
